Labs, Workshops and Classrooms

The Institute has a wide range of modern, well equipped laboratories, studios and workshops where students gain first-hand experience of, and training on, sophisticated scientific, engineering and business equipment.

The following is a list of specialized workshops, studios

Computer Facilities

Computing resources in the college include over 900 Pentium class PCs in some 20+ computer laboratories, all linked via a switched Ethernet/Gigabit LAN running NT as the main server operating system. Each lab is serviced by a networked laser printer and scanners and digital cameras are available for student use. There is a wide range of up to date software available to staff/students in the college running under Windows 98, Windows NT/2000 and Unix/Linux. Desktop packages range from the full MS Office 2000 suite as well as many other Databases, Programming Languages, Desktop publishing, Internet publishing, Case Tools and CAD packages.

Internet

The college is connected to the Internet via a broadband connection to ITNET. All students have full access to email and the world wide web from laboratory computers and the library.

Library

The new Institute Library opened its doors to staff and students for the first
time in September 1999.The facility incorporates 1,750 square metres of
shelving and study space on two levels with 450 user study places. A suite of PCs is provided and there are plans to provide data points at most of the study spaces. Bookstock is approaching 40,000 with an ongoing programme of stock development and improvement. There are also extensive collections of official publications, microfilm, maps, past Institute research, legislation and standards. Subscriptions to 150 scientific, technological and business journals are maintained in addition to various electronic information resources on CD-ROM and over the Internet. A photocopying service is provided. The Library is open Monday to Saturday during term time, with night opening to 10.00pm Monday to Thursday and staff are on hand to help you with your information needs. The Library is also expanding its online presence. Its web pages are available at the Institute site: www.itsligo.ie (Click “Administration” then “Library”) Facilities include the online catalogue, a range of databases, user guides and information on all aspects of the library. Users may request interlibrary loans, reserve PCs in the Library or make suggestions for the service online.

Common Room

Common Room facilities are available from 8.30am to 9.00pm. Breakfast is available from 8.30am, a full lunch from 12.00 noon and a full evening meal from 5.00pm to 6.30pm. George Gorman is the Canteen Manager. George is keenly aware of the culinary needs of the student population and succeeds very well in catering for these needs in a congenial, welcoming environment. The Students’ Common Room is a lively, friendly
place where students meet their colleagues in social and pleasant surroundings.

Aula Maxima

The Aula Maxima is a multi-purpose centre containing a large sports/assembly area, ancillary sporting facilities and a social area with a snack bar where students may relax after a strenuous work-out. It is used for various sports activities and Institute events such as examinations, conferring of awards and concerts.

Access Officer

This is a new position in the Institute aimed at supporting students with special needs, from disadvantaged backgrounds and mature students to make the transition to third level education and to participate fully and progress within their course of study. Students in these categories will receive support at pre entry upon entry, as well as during their course of study. This will include special initiatives in collaboration with schools and community based organisations to encourage individuals to consider participation in third level as a real option for them.

Student Services

Kathleen Cox is the Institute’s Student Services Officer with specific responsibilities for Institute student services. The existing framework for student services includes health, welfare, counselling, chaplaincy, careers, information and general services. “Caring for our students!” is the motto of this office. The Student Handbook will give you detailed information on the range of student services available.

Careers and Gradustes Service

The Careers and Graduates Officer is Adette Ring and her office is situated in the student services unit. Students seeking careers counselling should make an appointment with the Careers Officer by calling into her office or contacting her on 071-91 55403. The Careers Office can help you with information on the following • Compiling CVs and covering letter • Job Options • Interview techniques • Transferring to other colleges both within Ireland and overseas • Postgraduate opportunities • Employer information and visiting employer programme details • Travelling and working abroad • Student Workshop Programme e.g. Study Skills, Aptitude Tests, Interviews etc • Careers Fair - taking place on 30th January 2002 Details of all employment vacancies and study and career events are displayed on the careers notice board and are published in the monthly careers newsletter.

Recruitment Office

School Visits

Through the Recruitment Officer, the Institute provides a school visit programme, designed to give students the information needed in order for them to make an informed decision on their further education. This programme is available not only to second level schools but to all organisations that require further information on the wide variety of courses available within the Institute.
Institute Visits

Institute visits can also be arranged either for groups or on an individual basis. This gives students the opportunity to experience life in a third level Institute and to view the campus and its facilities at first hand.

Institute Open Day

The annual Open Day is one of the highlights of the academic year. Students can attend talks on the various courses, take a guided tour of the Institute, and view the exhibition stands in the Aula Maxima.

The Open Day coincides biannually with the Sligo Guidance Counsellors Open Day, and beginning this year will coincide with St. Angela’s College Open Day. Therefore providing the opportunity of visiting two colleges on one day.

Medical Services

A full-time nurse is available on the Institute campus from 9.00am to 5.00pm. A doctor is in attendance daily. A counsellor is presently available on a part-time basis while the full-time vacancy is being filled. Meningitis C - Prior to registration students are advised to have this vaccination which is available free from their own GP.

The Institute has Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland Chaplains. There are places of worship for different religions throughout the City.

IT Sligo Students UnionAll students in the Institute are members of the Students’ Union. The Union provides services for students in such areas as Welfare, Education, Sports and Entertainment.

Bank of Ireland

The Bank of Ireland has recently opened an on-campus branch building. Located in the Administration/Library, it provides a comprehensive banking service for students and staff. There is also a PASS machine. The branch is open from 10.00am to 4.00pm each day.

TRANSPORT

Sligo is serviced by a number of national primary routes including the N17 to Galway (85 miles) and the N4 to Dublin (135 miles). Further access is provided by airport and mainline rail. A bus depot is located in the town centre with regular services connecting to all centres nationwide. Sligo Airport has daily scheduled flights to Dublin for onward connection to Europe, while Knock International Airport, 40 miles from Sligo has flights to the UK and charter flights to Europe. Many students who are not from the City live in Sligo during the week and commute home at weekends. Special transport arrangements, both public and private, facilitate this to a variety of destinations in Mayo, Donegal, Leitrim, Roscommon, Monaghan, Cavan, Galway and Dublin via Longford and Mullingar.
